Hearth Money Rolls - Tullow

In the Hearth Money Rolls 1665
The following names were recorded in Tullow townland (Hills / Towloe).

One of the locations in the Hearth Money Rolls is simply recorded as “Hills” however, from the duplicate names that are common to this location and Towloe, then I’m pretty much certain they are the same area which corresponds to Tullow.

Generally the first name in a townland seems to be the most important landowner. At least that is my impression.

So in this case we have Captain Henry Shrempton. He is definitely an English settler and acquired 1902 acres in the area.

There is a large number of people recorded over the two lists. Many are duplicates however.

Other likely English settlers listed include Cooke, Wixted, Harden, Nash & Taylor. McDonnell is more than likely from the Scottish / Irish clan. There are a few surnames that I am unsure of their origin – Garner, Lane, are inconclusive. There is also the Anglo-Norman name Fanning.

The rest are likely to be Gaelic in origin and include Ryan, Kelly, Cullen, Murphy, McLoughlin, O’Connell, O’Donoghue, O’Brien, O’Meara?, O’Mahony, Casey, Maughan & Kearney. There are also some Mc surnames, likely to be descendants of someone else rather than surnames in their own right eg Connor McOwen might actually be Connor son of Owen Ryan.

Marchie I can’t transliterate to a modern surname.

In the 1666-7 return Thomas Cooke lives up to his name, owning an Oven. Lawrence Fanning also owns an Oven.

There is the 1766 census available for the general area but unless someone has a very distinct surname it is nearly impossible to make any kind of connection.

https://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/tipperary/census/1766-rel-cens/newport.htm

I can’t go into all the names in this but it is interesting to see Shrempton is no longer recorded in the area.

The next available "Census" for the area is the Tithe Appointment Books 1827.

Custom Gap seems to be the rough area that corresponds to Tullow. There may be others that I’m not aware of.

In Custom Gap, the surnames Casey, Ryan, Cullen, Donnell (is that McDonnell?) & O’Brien continue from the Hearth Money Rolls.

There is also an 1835 census available for the Parishes of Newport and Birdhill (transcribed by Hugh Sweeney of Newport Historical & Archaeological Society in Newport News).

The is a very detailed number of people recorded;

However it again it is difficult to be sure what corresponds to the “Towloe” of the 1660s.

It is likely that parts of the following make it up

Cork Road Street

Pound Street & Clonbealy

Bloomfield & Custom Gap

Racepark, Brierfield & Lahane

From reviewing them we find names that continue from the Hearth Money Rolls including Ryan, O’Brien, O’Connell, O’Meara, Casey & McDonnell.

In the later Griffiths valuation (see pictures); Ryan, Cullen, McDonnell, O’Brien, Casey, Wixted, Kelly & Connell continue from the Hearth Money Rolls.

Of those names it is Wixted that is probably the one that you could argue strongly that has carried through from the Hearth Money Rolls, Cullen & McDonnell are another two that you could argue for to a degree, Kelly, Casey & Connell are sufficiently rare to at least do further research on. Ryan and O’Brien would be more difficult to be sure of.

The 1901 Census

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Newport/Tullow/

Cullen, Kelly & Ryan are listed.

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Newport/Tallow_Main_Street/

Wixted & Ryan are listed.

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Newport/Cork_Road/

Connell, Ryan, O’Meara & Cullen are listed.

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Newport/Pound_Street/

Ryan & Wixted are listed.

As I said in the the Griffiths commentary; Cullen, Kelly & Wixted you could have a relatively strong case for. Connell definitely worth reviewing. Ryan and perhaps O’Meara I’d be less sure about.

And 1911 Census
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Newport/Tullow/

Ryan listed.

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Newport/Cork_Road/

O’Connell, Ryan, Kelly, Cullen, O’Meara are listed.

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Newport/Pound_Street/

Ryan & Wixted are listed.

The large amount of names and difficulty of figuring out which streets made up Tullow in this townland have made it difficult to work with. As such I can only regard this as a draft and I’m am open to any help / comments.

Cullen, Wixted & Kelly are three relatively rare surnames that survive from the Hearth Money Rolls up to the 1911 census in the townland. O’Connell & O’Meara also continue but would be less rare.

As a later exercise will also try and look at the Civil Survey – Transplantation records – Hearth Money Rolls but I think I will keep that as a separate exercise.

My own analysis of the rolls highlighting the Owney records.
