Monroe
The following are recorded in the Civil Survey for the area.
Lewes Walsh of Thurles Esqr.
Thomas O Hogan of Youghill Gent
Dermott O Bryen of Cleyduffe Gent
Donogh Bryen of Cleyduffe Gent.
Morogh O Hogan of the same Gent
The description gives us some very useful genealogical
information namely that Lewes Walsh owned his share “by purchase in fee to
him and his beiges from Margarett Bryen als Terrill & hir husband & More
Brycn Spinster Sisters of Onora Wailsh all three being Daughters and coheires
of Mortogh O Bryen of Castletowne and of the other third pte of the sd.
three pTds in right of his wife Onora (as wee are informed).”
“A Castle and som thatch cabins, the ruins of an old Mill
and a Brooke running in the meare of
the sd lands on the West” were also recorded. Part of the
castle was still standing in the 1840s.
So this confirms that Lewes Walsh and Onora were married.
Previously we created this possible family tree.
Lewis Walsh m Onora Byren of Castletown
Likely Sons –Patrick Walsh of Pallas (HMR) – Edmond Walsh of
Carrigatoher Esqr (HMR) – possibly James Walsh of Castletown (HMR)
For the Byrens
Father
Murrough (Bishop of Killaloe) (of Onora)
Mortagh Bryen of Castletown married Onora Bryen
Daughters Margarett Bryen m Thomas Terrill / Tyrell – More
Bryen (Spinster) – Onora Byren m Lewis Walsh of Thurles
Two women may have been decreed to be transplanted from this
townland. O’Hart mentions it in his book - The Irish landed gentry when
Cromwell came to Ireland.
Onor Walsh of Thurles and Slaney O’Bryen of Moncoe are
listed after others from the Arra area. Neither of these are recorded in
Simington’s Transplantation to Connacht so I’m not sure of where O’Harts
original record for this originates. It may suggest perhaps that Lewis Walsh of
Thurles was deceased at this stage. I’m not sure exactly who Slaney O’Bryen /
Bryen. Onor Walsh (nee Bryen) has a sister Slaney O’Byren who was married to a
Teige O’Brien of Thomond (he was the brother of Dermod O’Brien 5th
Baron of Inchiquin). (See O’Brien article in Annals of Arra – Vol 2, pg 79).
However by the time of the Hearth Money Rolls – Onnor Walsh is
still recorded as resident in Monroe and her house has 2 Hearths / is the biggest
recorded in the townland.
There are no O’Briens or Hogans recorded in the townland in
the HMR. We also find no continuation of the Walsh, O’Brien or Hogan surnames
in later records in the townland.
