The following are recorded in the Civil Survey in this townland
Hugh Hogan of Youghill Gent
Thomas Hogan of Youghill Gent
Donogh O Hogan of Ardkelly
Teige O Bryen of Cahirconner Esqr
Teige O Hogan of Youghill Gent
Hugh roe O Hogan of Youghill Gent &
Morish mcDennish (Hogan) of Loghaneleagh
Teige O Bryen owns his share by purchase from Daniell Hogan
& Morish O’Hogan. This ties in with the fact that the lands here are probably
linked to the former monastery here where the O’Hogans where coarbs. They
probably would have retained the lands following the Dissolution of the
Monasteries by Henry the VIII in the 1530s / 1540s. Unusually maybe the
monastery is not mentioned in the description of the lands.
Morish mcDennis of Loghaneleagh is listed and I would have
theorised that he was an O’Hogan and this is confirmed in the text. Interestingly
it is a tailor named Denis Hogan of Creggane that was recorded in the Ordnance
Survey Letters in the 1840s by O’Donovan as being in possession of St. Conlan’s
Crozier - Bachall Chunnlain. It was thought to have passed down through the
Hogan family who were descended from the Coarbs of Youghal. There is a Loughaun
townland bordering Creggane.
Looking at other records we find a Gabriel Hogan listed for
transplantation from Youghal to Galway – Barony of Ballymoe and the parish of
Clonbern. There are no Hogans listed in that townland in the Griffiths Valuation.
There is also an Edmund Hogan – Late of Youghal who is listed
for transplantation to Killaloe Parish in Co. Clare only a few miles down the River
Shannon.
In the Hearth Money Rolls 1665 we find a Gabriel Hogan
living in Youghal. This must surely be the same person that was listed for
transplantation. There is also a Teige Morrish who I think may have some
relationship with Morish mcDennish (Hogan).
In the 1666/67 we again find Gabriel Hogan in the townland. There
are two Teige Hogana, one who may be the Teige O’Hogan mentioned in the Civil
Survey. There is also a John McMorrogh. Similar to above I wonder could he be
linked to Morish mcDennish (Hogan)?
If so you may have a small potential family tree.
Father - Denis O’Hogan
Son Morish McDennish Hogan (Civil Survey)
Grandsons – John McMorrogh Hogan – Teige McMorrogh Hogan
There are also two O’Bryans listed in the Hearth Money Rolls
and they may be linked to Teige O’Bryen of Cahirconners purchase of lands here.
Looking at the later records, although the Hogans seem to
have survived being transplanted to Connacht, they don’t fare too well in the
townland with no Hogans in the Griffiths Valuation. There are some O’Briens though,
for more on this see the link.
